Abunayyan & Pani Announce Strategic Partnership

Abunayyan Holding has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Pani to implement water treatment plant optimization software in Abunayyan's extensive client's network of desalination and industrial wastewater treatment facilities throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

For over 70 years, Abunayyan Holding has been a pioneer in developing the power and water infrastructure within the MENA region through engineering and technology advancement; Recognized as an industry leader in these sectors, with a mission centered around “SUSTAINING LIFE” by developing and Integrating purpose made solutions, Abunayyan strives to address customer needs, and challenges in a way that makes cities eco-friendly, convenient, and habitable.

"With this partnership, and the innovative machine learning platform from Pani, we will drive fleets of treatment plants forward into a new level of efficiency” says Wesam Muhammad, Digital Transformation and Innovation Director at Abunayyan Holding. “This partnership remains true to our ethos of 'Sustaining Life' and to our roots of pursuing revolutionary contributions to raising the standard of living."

The MENA region relies heavily on reverse osmosis for desalination due to extreme scarcity of freshwater, which leaves few other options. Reverse osmosis is typically regarded as expensive and energy-intensive, and governments in these regions heavily subsidize water rates to keep prices low. According to experts, the Middle East alone accounts for more than 60% of the global desalination capacity, more than anywhere else on Earth.

“We've seen water treatment processes and instrumentation make advances over the years” says Khalid Abunayyan, the company's Chairman of the Board. “Pani provides a unique software solution so technologically advanced, that it can create value rivaling upgraded equipment, and for such a minimal cost. We are thrilled to see how efficiencies will improve with Pani's technology."

Recent developments in cloud-computing and internet of things (IoT) technologies, paired with machine learning (ML) and holistic digital twinning techniques, have allowed for practical improvements in water treatment performance. Pani integrates with existing systems (SCADA and PLC systems) not only to centralize and visualize data, but to analyze, interpret, and actively prescribe optimal set-points (pressures, flow rates, on/off cycles) for optimum energy consumption and product water quality at different levels of demand.

“This partnership means the MENA region will be able to reduce the cost and GHG associated with water, while privatizing and supplying its growing water demands” says Pani CEO, Devesh Bharadwaj. “Our goal is to make water treatment more affordable, more climate resilient and more accessible to people and communities in water stressed regions. Technology is helping us do that in a way that hasn’t been possible before.”
